leaving rosewood after graduation was a daunting experience for noel. as excited as he was to be on his own for the first time in life, there was always that underlying fear, you know, what if this is as good as it gets ? see, despite his explosive qualities, noel is a very self aware person — it’s one of his greatest strengths. he knows that people like him, hometown hero types, have a tendency to peak in high school, & that’s just not the person he was interested in becoming. needless to say, he does end up following his older brother eric to upenn, but it doesn’t take long for noel to realize this was not the road he yearned to travel. although the social aspects of university appealed to him, he’d had enough of that back home — he wanted to see something that mattered. he’d spent the last four or some years on speed dial, devoting his life to alison dilaurentis & her trove of secrets, & now that he’s finally been given the chance to become his own person, he didn’t just want to throw it away & become a clone of his father. so, he emptied his bank account & left.
lying to his parents was the easy part. despite their lofty expectations of their children, they honestly didn’t give a fuck where he was or what he was doing as long as it didn’t affect them. a trip home a few times a year for the holidays was all it took to keep them out of the loop. as for eric, two kahns on one campus was never really their style to begin with, so he agreed to keep his brother’s secret . . . at a cost. basically, noel owed him one, & eric was free to snap his fingers & cash in at a moment’s notice. over the next two or some years, noel traveled — a lot. he went everywhere & nowhere, blowing through his trust fund & living in everything from shacks to chateaus. for the first time in his life, noel felt truly content. on the road, nobody knew who he was or had expectations of him to be a certain way. he got to play music wherever & whenever he wanted & didn’t have to worry about money — at least for a while. of course, there was a price to his hedonistic adventures, & after a liquor-fueled bar fight in tijuana, he was thrown in jail & the jig was up.
when his father arrived to bail him out, the truth came out — that noel had left upenn years ago & was spending time & money pursuing a vastly different future than he was meant to. just as his family cuts him off for being an embarrassment ( no amount of money blown matched up to the shame his mom & dad felt when they looked at their failure of a son ), the court orders him to attend rehab for a drinking problem he was convinced he didn’t have. a few months of constant surveillance & head shrinking seemed anticlimactic following his previous years of debauchery, but noel muscled through like he was raised, going along with the steps & making connections with all the right people. right as he gets out with a three month sobriety chip in hand ( what a joke ), he receives a letter from alison dialurentis, asking him to come back to rosewood to testify for the release of her sister. though convinced there was nothing left for him there, or anywhere — he did.
