inkskinned:

he never wrote me poems. we would fuck in his car or on his bed where others girls had been or in the shower or while i was crying. we saw each other naked so often i have the image painted on the back of my eyelids. he ripped my underwear off. i was always vulnerable. i woke him up with kisses, he woke me up with hickies. for a long time, i thought they were the same thing.

i asked him once while we both got high why it was that i could write novels about him until the words got tired of being anagrams of his name - but at the same time he would never reciprocate. he blew a smoke ring and broke it with his finger. “dunno,” he said. we would fuck again later.

i found him once sitting on my floor staring at a picture from when i was young. “god,” he said, “i really fucked you up.”

“Everything about Mrs. Kahn sparkled, from her ears to her neck to her wrists to her fingers. It was common knowledge that last year, when Noel’s father had gone to L.A. to finance yet another golf course, he’d bought out half of Harry Winston for his wife. The bill had been posted on a local gossip blog.”

known for his abundant parties  &  ability to detect drama within a twenty-mile radius  ,  noel kahn is a bethel legend.   the second son of judge steven  &  country club staple monica  ,  his childhood was a blur of minimal supervision  &  rich-kid rebellion with the company of his older brother  ,  eric.   with their shiny credit cards  &  spacious woodside cabin perfect for throwing weekend long ragers  ,  the kahn brothers became quite the asset to their small maine town.   although noel always struggled to find his way out from eric’s shadow  ,  he seemed to be a big hit amongst his peers  —  that  ,  or they just tolerated his antics in exchange for an all access pass to his flashy life.   to be honest  ,  he could never tell.

it was only after eric graduated that noel truly found his niche in high school.   between friends  ,  football  ,  &  the endless stream of girls  ,  weed  ,  &  booze that came with being a kahn  ,  it was a wonder he managed to score decent enough grades to keep from flunking out  —  assuming he didn’t steal the test answers.   the summer before senior year  ,  noel became close with elena gilbert.   she was nothing like any of the girls he typically went for  ,  which was probably the reason he became so enamored.   for the first time in sixteen years  ,  the king of no commitment actually found himself settling down.   while he began his final of high school in a state of unexpected happiness  ,  the two slowly made plans for noel to follow her to college after getting his diploma.   unfortunately  ,  after elena caught noel dealing pot to her younger brother jeremy at his graduation party  ,  it became clear that bethel’s bad boy wasn’t ever going to change his ways  —  not even for the girl he supposedly loved.

noel tried the whole college thing  ,  he really did  ,  but after just one semester  ,  he decided his heart just wasn’t really in it.   admittedly  ,  sharing a campus with the ex-girlfriend you’re still very much into isn’t exactly an alluring prospect.  still  ,  noel knew dropping out would only make for a very angry father  ,  so he decided to keep it a secret.   he’s been spending the last year  &  a half grobe-trotting with his acoustic guitar  &  crashing on various couches  ,  only returning home for college breaks to see his pals  &  lie to his parents about where he’s been.   eventually  ,  they’ll start to notice the draining trust fund  &  evident lack of diploma  ,  but until that day comes  ,  noel plans to keep up the facade.

somewhere between new york  &  philadelphia  ,  a filthy little diner resides  ,  providing solace to the lost  &  hungry at all hours of the night.   there  ,  noel has been sitting for what felt like weeks  ,  nursing the same ice cold slice of cherry pie  ,  impatiently drumming his fingertips against the sugar-dusted tabletop  ,  stealing furious glances towards a nicked-up burner phone purchased from a gas station twenty miles outside of rosewood.   he’s on his fourth cup of coffee when the door finally creaks open  ,  bell chiming with cheerful hospitality as a girl in a red coat with the hood pulled over her head slips into the booth across from him.      i told you not to keep me waiting.      spoken with cool contempt  ,  as if he’s the one in control.
